Description
Originating from the Thane district of Maharashtra, in the village that goes by the name Warli, the art of Warli is an artistic representation of the social structure of the tribe living along the Maharashtra, Gujarat borders around the 3rd century BC.
Despite being centuries old, Warli art rose to prominence only during the 1970s, encouraging the Government to recognize and preserve the indigenous art form for future generations to learn, interpret and draw inspiration from the social and cultural structures that formed the layers of the 3rd century BC and later.
The Warli art is nothing but a conventional depiction of everyday human life. The art form does not carry the nuances of the mythological or devotional structures that formed the basis of moral principles of the then humans, but simply the social lives of individuals. Warli art is an exceptional depiction of hunting, dancing, sowing, harvesting to other important day-to-day activities, illustrated in rhythmic motions, that entice and captivate the masses.
Though repetitive and continuous, these themes represent utmost jubilation, cheerfulness, and spontaneity. The handmade furniture is inspired by Warli art form, with human figures portrayed as engaged in daily activities with some journeying together of people back to their humble abodes after a long day.
The art has been attempted by hand along the grains of the wood. The hollowed center of the wood has been filled with resin, on which the artwork has been done. The wood outside the center has been hand-painted, preserving and protecting it with epoxy resin, which is later buffed for a glossy shine and oiled for protection against any kind of possible harm.
